Valerie is AMAZING! Our daughter is very delayed and has a sensory disorder and we met Valerie when she was about 10 months old she is now two. She helped us in so many ways, everything was always done in a timely manor, she was always a step ahead and got done what needed to be done, She was always there to wipe a tear and clap and celebrate the "big" moments. She loves our daughter as her own and will always be part of our family. I truely dont think our daughter would be as amazing as she is and having every "box" checked to make sure she was receiving all she could with out her...Thank you!
Parent: Gretchen Haubner Duwel, Child: Audrey
When our daughter, Audrey, was 16 months old she was diagnosed as having a significant speech delay. Our doctor referred us to Ahead Start and shortly thereafter she began receiving speech therapy 2 hours a week in our home. Our Early Interventionist, Valerie, helped Audrey increase her vocabulary, and encouraged her growth and development in all areas. After one year Audrey was developmentally right where she should be, a very active and talkative two and a half year old! The one on one attention in combination with the group play dates and classes allowed us to meet other families in similar situations and get to know all of the wonderful counselors. We continue to go to keep in touch with Valerie and go to the play dates and are grateful to be a part of the Ahead Start family.

I am so glad I chose Ahead Start for my son, Max. His EI Amanda has been a god send! When Max was diagnosed with autism disorder, she helped me navigate a confusing and intimidating path to resources. With her guidance, Max is getting what he needs. Her repport with Max is amazing. She helped him communicate, teaching him sign language for when Max "loses his words." She taught me how to help Max make sense of his world. It is obvious that helping children is a passion, not just a job. I would be lost without her.
Child: Noah
In September 2009, my grandson’s K-2 teacher felt that his speech was delayed as he wasn’t speaking in sentences and said very few understandable words. He was born 12/25/2006. Gail Warner, the Child Enrichment Program Director for Memorial United Methodist Church, contacted Ahead Start and someone came to speak with his parents and assess his situation.
From October-December 2009 a speech therapist came to his pre-school one day/week for an hour’s session of speech therapy.
In early September Noah began an hour/week “play therapy” session with Amanda Wilson at our home. Noah responded immediately to Amanda and eagerly looked forward to her visit each week. I was present for most of their sessions and could tell that Noah really enjoyed them and related well to Amanda. Through games, puzzles, manioulative toys, etc. Noah learned and thrived without realizing he was being taught. By the end of May 2010, Noah tested out of the program and Amanda felt that he had “caught up” with his age group. He was speaking in sentences and had developed a love for making jig-saw puzzles, 24-48 pieces. He has continued to develop and grow and we are very grateful for the services and experiences that Ahead Start provided for our grandson.
Parent: Kathy, Child: Chase
Our son Chase was born with a congenital heart defect, had heart surgeries at 7 days old and 4 ½ months old, and could not be on his tummy for 6 weeks following each surgery. I contacted Ahead Start after his second surgery and met the most wonderful EI who has been invaluable in helping Chase reach his milestones. She also referred us to a top-notch Physical Therapist and together, they have been instrumental in developing Chase’s fine and gross motor skills, as well as in showing me how to work with him in between visits to aid his progress. I cannot say enough to truly express the gratitude I have for our EI and the outstanding improvements Chase has made over a short 6 month period. Thank you!!

Early intervention through Ahead Start has made a big difference in my son's life. When my son was around 18 months we noticed his speech wasn't developing. We consulted our pediatrician who referred us to early intervention. This is when we came to work with Ahead Start. Our early interventionist was godsend to our family. She came and worked with our son once a week and helped us gain all the services he needed for speech and occupational therapy. Today our son is a healthy, happy, and bright verbal 4 year old. I don't feel he would be doing this well without the services he received from Ahead Start and for that we are eternally grateful.

Mrs. Freemon is a very nice and helpful person. Anything I need for the child that is currently enrolled in the program or my other 3 siblings she has very good resources on whatever I need. She really loves her job and she is the best at it. If there is a something I need help shes there to the very best of her ability. I will recommend your services to other families in need of services.
Parents: Walkers, EI: Deidre
I am very grateful to the people at Ahead Start because as a mother of two kids who both have their unique health issues, they kept me informed. My daughter suffers from an epilsey disorder and was receiveing services: she started to make cooing vocalizations and playing with toys. They helped me with noticing that she also may have some vision problems early on and how to address them before it was too late. Noe knowing what helps and hurts as far as her vision, she is able to take gradual steps in her walker without interference.
My son had issues with his speech and communication as well. Over a period of time they was able to bring to my attention that although he was striving there may be some other health issues in regards to his hearing that maybe need to be checked into. They guided me as far as who to contact and the steps to take to make sure he was seen and his needs was met in a timely fashion. His hearing improved as well as he was diagnosed with autism.
Now my kids are 8 and 5 years old. With the help from true people that care selfishness, I am able to concentrate equally on creating a stable and learning environment for both of my children. They are more energetic, they play and communicate more and they are thriving daily to meet there own set goals. Without Ahead Start, I wouldn’t have been able to see any of this happen. I am so anxious on a daily basis to see what happens next…
